Nielsen Ratings Issues 2017 Year-End Music Report

January 4, 2018

Nielsen Ratings (the U.S. company that measures audience viewership/listenership/interactions with TV and radio) has issued its 2017 Year-End Music Report with the most recent calculations of music & album sales, streaming data, and all other forms of music consumption.

In a nutshell, it was hard rockin' METALLICA that emerged as the top act of the past year in the rock song genre, propelled not only by the success of the band's most recent LP, Hardwired...To Self Destruct, but also by the massive 30th Anniversary set for their breakthrough album, Master of Puppets

The summary also reports that legacy acts/performers still show surprising staying power when it comes to catalog (vinyl) album sales. That last point is underscored by the fact that not one, but TWO (vinyl) albums from The BEATLES topped the list of 2017 Album Sales: Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band followed by Abbey Road! However, it's METALLICA that claims the top spot based on total album sales and what are referred to as "album sales equivalents."

The Nielsen Year-End Report also includes summaries of Top Stories of 2017, Live Music Insights, & Year End Charts. Read the entire Nielsen 2017 Year-End Report HERE.
