Steely Dan co-founder Walter Becker died suddenly on September 3rd, and at the time, his cause of death was unknown to the public. But today, Rolling Stone reports that he died of esophageal cancer.

In a letter written to Rolling Stone, the late rocker’s widow, Delia Becker, revealed that her husband died during treatment for an “extremely aggressive” form of the cancer. According to Delia, the unexpected diagnosis was followed by the disease’s spread at a “terrifying speed.” In fact, it spread so quickly that once detected, the cancer took Becker’s life within four months.

Before thanking family, friends, and fans for their outpouring of love over the past few months, Delia revealed that Walter died peacefully with family by his side in the home shared by the couple in New York City.
