Matthew McConaughey Joins Instagram, Wigs Out in On-Brand First Post

Matthew McConaughey hopped on the hottest new trend on Monday when he joined Instagram for his 50th birthday.

The “Beach Bum” star kicked the account off with an extremely McConaughey-ian first post, a video of him waxing philosophic about social media.

“When people come to my page, I want them to see me,” he said in the first video post, looking laid-back as ever in a black backwards cap, white button-down shirt and sherpa collar denim jacket.

“This is my first venture into sharing myself and my views with the world and I’m a little bit nervous about it because quite frankly, I know I want to have a monologue, I’m not sure I want to have the dialogue, but I’m learning that you have to have the dialogue to have the monologue, just as you have a monologue to have the dialogue,” the actor added.

McConaughey continued to express his excitement for opening up on the platform. ““I’m looking forward to sharing who I am with you. I’m looking forward to seeing if who I am translates, if what I want to share translates, if it tickles your funny bone, if it makes you think a second, if it makes your heart swell up a little bit, if it makes you take a quiet moment and go for a walk. Let’s have some fun with it though.”

The actor, whose handle is @officiallymcconaughey, describes himself in his bio as “Husband. Father. Actor. Minister of Culture. Professor. Creative Director. AustinFC. JKLivin. Pickle Expert.”

The move comes just weeks Jennifer Aniston broke the platform after kicking off her new account with a selfie of the main “Friends” cast reunited.

On Friday, McConaughey and his bourbon brand Wild Turkey partnered and disaster relief organization Operation BBQ Relief to serve food to California wildfire first responders.
